Design Challenge: Once again, the existing kitchen had a single small entrance that created a
bottleneck. The kitchen and living room had become a hub for family gatherings in recent years,
so it became apparent to the owners that the rooms needed to be updated and more open.
Solution: We added 100 square feet to the home to expand this kitchen and removed a wall
that separated the kitchen from the living area to create a more open floor plan. Adding a prep
sink in a new Island with a warming drawer, microwave, and lots of storage provided plenty of
additional work space to accommodate larger gatherings. The addition of a nine foot peninsula
served as a great buffet counter that was easily accessible but did not impact the kitchen flow.
The large skylight over the island yielded plenty of natural light and the adjoining table for two
created an intimate focal point for cooking while entertaining, or even a great place to do
homework.
