Design Challenge: This early 1970’s kitchen originally had dark ash stained cabinets which
made for a dark kitchen. The entrance into the kitchen was through a narrow doorway that
darkened the space further.
Solution: With only minor structural changes, we were able to open up the entrance and add a
skylight well that spilled natural lighting into both the kitchen and the adjacent room. Adding a
solar light tunnel with a light kit in the ceiling created enough light during the day to eliminatethe need to turn lights on in the kitchen. The peninsula had a hidden door with shelf space and power for phone/charging stations. A built in chef’s pantry next to the refrigerator added
additional accessible storage space.
